CHICAGO (CBS) — Three people were shot on a CTA bus Monday afternoon in the Chatham neighborhood, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
The shooting happened at the intersection of 77th and State. around 6:17 p.m., police say.
Fire officials say a 18-year-old man was shot multiple times in his stomach, arm and chest, and an 18-year-old woman was shot once.under her arm.
Both were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, officials say.
A 59-year-old man was also shot and self-transported to St. Bernard Hospital with a graze wound to the left side.
Police said the shooter was on the CTA bus, got off and then started shooting into the bus, hitting the three people.
“We both hear the gunshots, so we dived down,” said Joyce Montgomery. “Next thing you know we were piling up on each other.”
Montgomery and so many other on the CTA bus hit the floor around 6:15 p.m.
“There was about four to five shots, and I was concerned about the kids,” said Cheryl Sparks. “Everybody on the bus heard the shots, and we just laid down.”
Detectives searched the CTA bus and interviewed passengers trying to determine who pulled the trigger and what led up to it.
“The man ran off the bus with dreadlocks and went that way,” said Sparks.
Police were questioning someone as of 10 p.m.
No arrests have been made, but detectives said they hope cameras inside the bus will help solve the case.
