CHICAGO (CBS) — An afternoon out on the river turned deadly Tuesday night for a man whose canoe capsized.

Police and fire crews were called to the channel near Bryn Mawr and Jersey/Kedzie avenues at 5:09 p.m. The Fire Department said the man was found by divers in the channel after the canoe overturned.

Paramedics attempted resuscitation at the scene.

Police said the 60-year-old man was rushed to Swedish Hospital. He was initially reported in serious condition, but he was later pronounced dead.

Rescuers said the man was not wearing a life jacket when he was found.
