SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS/WBBM) – Proponents of efforts to enact concealed carry laws in Illinois have released the results of a survey they say proves the issue isn’t as geographically divided as it seems.

As WBBM Newsradio 780’s Alex Degman reports, more than half of the survey respondents across four state Senate districts in the city of Chicago and the suburbs said they think law-abiding citizens should be able to protect themselves.

“It’s not a regional issue. It’s not downstate versus Chicago. People all across this state are wanting the ability to defend themselves, and some of the people who need it the most are people who live in what some residents have described as a war zone,” said National Rifle Association Illinois lobbyist Todd Vandermyde.

The survey did not ask respondents about the pending conceal and carry legislation that was recently approved by the state House Agriculture Committee. Most questions related to how safe the respondents feel.

Vandermyde says he has not yet been in contact with the lawmakers associated with the districts to discuss the results.

The concealed carry bill passed the Agriculture Committee by a vote of 12-2 earlier this month. But the committee is dominated by downstate pro-gun rights lawmakers, and the bill must pass the full state General Assembly.

Last year, long-standing handgun bans in Chicago and Oak Park were rendered unenforceable by the U.S. Supreme Court in the ruling on the case McDonald v. Chicago. The City Council quickly passed the new ordinance to replace the gun ban, which ordinance limits gun purchases to one per month, bans gun shops in city limits and prohibits gun owners from stepping outside their homes, even onto their porches or garages.

Why not ? Most people here are already carrying concealed weapons anyway.
Besides whats a few more guns in Englewood ?

  • Bill

Concealed carry should be allowed for honest law abiding citizens who have passed a background check and required training, maybe then the criminal element will think twice about whom they rob, the current system isn’t working so time for a change.

Off duty cops are allowed to carry a concealed weapon. If we the residents are not able then they should NOT be allowed to carry a weapon when they are off duty. If Mayor Daley feels that we don’t have the right to protec ourselves then provide us with a bodyguard like the ones he has to chofer us around and protect us against criminal that carry guns. Criminals will carry a gun no matter what law is passed, they don’t care.

Daley said that guns are dangerous so that is all you need to know. Forget aout the fact that he has always been protected by and driven around by people with those dangerous guns yet he never got hurt. Daley never had a real job and never had to drive into a bad area and never had to take the CTA and never walked alone anywhere in Chicago so he knows what is good for you.

Bottom line ? concealed carry levels the field for the good guys vs thugs.Besides it just makes sense and it’s our rights and lives PERIOD !!!!

  • phillmarines

If politicians don’t get around to doing the right thing on pro conceal carry? Time to vote them out of office.

  • Mr. Justice

Don’t forget to contact your state senators and representatives and kindly ask them to support Conceal Carry here in Illinois.
Also, I cannot believe that only 6 people have commented on this story. I believe someone, somewhere, is censoring the remarks on this story. Because this low of a response is not normal. I’m just saying………..

Nobody things guns are a good thing but they are a fact of life. Cops are reactive not proactive in most disputes that end up with gun fire. Accordingly, the people need to protect themselves and that means from others who may use guns in an illegal way. Give it up Illinois, since we can not ban guns, those who choose to own and carry, if properly licenses and trained, should be free to do so along with the decisions of 48 other states that have legalized some form of carry for it citizens.

CARRYING AND USING ONE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. ALL INVOLVED NEED TO BE PROPERLY TRAINED ON WHEN USE IS JUSTIFIED OTHERWISE THE SURVIVING VICTIM MAT BE ABLE TO SUE YOU. BELIEVE IT. I AM SURE IT WILL HAPPEN IF IT IS PASSED. I AM ALL FOR IT JUST BEWARE OF THE PROBLEMS OF ACTUALLY USING ONE.

If I shot someone and I was a concealed carry permit holder it would be because I was protecting my life or someone elses life. There would be no reaseon for me to have to be worried about being sued by the person I shot because he or she would be dead or I would be dead.

Guns are used 2191 times a day in America by honest law abiding citizens to protect themselves from vicious criminal predators. In 95% of these cases, no shots are fired. Just the sight of the gun will send most criminals running for their useless lives. The citizens of Illinois, especially women, the elderly and the handicapped deserve to have the legal right to protect themselves. In over 98% of violent crimes, the police do not get involved until AFTER THE CRIME HAS TAKEN PLACE!!! When seconds count…the ploice are only minutes away! We need concealed carry NOW!!!

  • Terry S.

i never understood how Illinois thought they where right and the other 48 states have been wrong. The criminals have always had guns. I what to exercise my 2nd amendment rights to protect myself like the rest of the country. Times have changed in this country with violent gangs ,drugs and crime.Gov Quinn says he will veto anything that comes across his desk on concealed carry…. to me thats a crime of not allowing my rights. By the way, How close was that last election Mr. Quinn

Make a comprehensive llist, at one website, of all idiots who vote against this. Afterwards, remove them from office. It’s really simple. Who do you represent, me or your pockets?

Proponents released a survey that supports their view of things!? Color me shocked!
