Parolee Charged In Brutal Weekend Assault

UPDATED 03/28/11 5:27 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man on parole for armed robbery was charged Monday with a brutal attack on 65-year-old northwest suburban man found walking downtown early Saturday badly beaten and covered in blood.

Cortez Foster, 45, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street, was charged late Monday afternoon with aggravated criminal sexual assault, armed robbery and aggravated battery, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

As CBS 2's Susanna Song reports, the 45-year old suspect, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street, was arrested late Sunday. He was initially brought in for questioning as a witness, police said.

The victim, a 65-year-old northwest suburban man, was found walking in the 800 block of South Michigan Avenue. His face was bloody, and several of his teeth had been knocked out.

When the man was found, he was not wearing shoes or pants, and had only one sock on.

The attack happened near the Gen. John Logan monument in Grant Park.

Not only was the man robbed of his cell phone and savagely beaten, but he was also anally assaulted with a tree limb, police said.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where doctors had to remove part of the tree branch that was lodged in his rectum.

Police initially believed the victim was homeless, but later said he was from the northwest suburbs. Although the man's condition was not immediately known, his injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

"He was beaten up real bad," said a police source. "It was an act of extreme violence."

The victim remained at Northwestern Memorial Monday morning.

Foster, who was serving a 20-year sentence at the Centralia Correctional Center for a 2000 armed robbery conviction before being paroled last May, is scheduled to appear in bond court at noon Tuesday.

He was also sentenced to six years for robbery in 1996 and seven years for armed robbery in 1991, records show.
