More Than 15,000 Unemployment Claims Filed In Illinois Last Week Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

CHICAGO (CBS)-- The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported 15,570 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of August 30 in Illinois.

The figure was basically unchanged from the previous week, when 15,546 people filed for unemployment. During the same week last year, 25,478 people filed for unemployment amid the pandemic.

For perspective, during the same week in 2019, pre-pandemic, 7,180 people filed.

So while in the last two weeks we've seen the lowest numbers since late April, it is still more than double what we were seeing in normal times.

Since the pandemic began, there have been more than 3.9 million total claims filed in the state.

Members of the IDES said on Thursday that they are seeing signs the economic recovery in Illinois is slow because of the delta variant of the coronavirus.

Illinois' estimated claims are among 310,000 total claims filed across the country last week.

There were 15,546 new unemployment claims were filed in Illinois during the week of August 23.

There were 22,258 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of August 16 in Illinois.

There were 18,426 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of August 9 in Illinois.

There were 21,499 new unemployment claims filed during the week of August 2 in Illinois.
