4 Killed, 15 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The summer-like weather this weekend brought bikers and rollerbladers to the streets in Chicago, but on in many areas, it meant gunshots and tragedy.

At least four people were killed and 15 more were wounded in shootings between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday, largely on the city's South Side. Two children, ages 13 and 8, were among the wounded victims.

The most recent victim to lose his life was shot in the 7400 block of South Vincennes Avenue in the Hamilton Park neighborhood.

Christopher Daniels, 22, of the 6200 block of South Perry Avenue, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 5:17 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Daniels was stopped at a red light about 4:45 p.m. Sunday, when a gunman exited a vehicle behind him and started shooting at the victim's car, according to a police incident report.

Three others were shot and killed late Saturday and early Sunday.

Christopher Young, 18, was standing on sidewalk on the 400 block of West 79th Street when shots rang out, and he was struck in a suspected drive-by shooting He was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:40 a.m. Sunday.

Jesus Arellanos, 20, was shot in the alley behind his house on the 2400 block of West 45th Street. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital of Cook County at 1:57 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Michael Lee, 23, was shot while sitting in his vehicle Saturday night in the 5500 block of South King Drive. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 11:44 p.m.

On Sunday, two children survived after being shot in the 5100 block of South Calumet Avenue. The girl, 13, and the boy, 8, were playing in their front yard around 4:18 p.m., when shots rang out. They were both taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital – the girl with a gunshot wound to an arm, the boy with a graze wound to the buttocks, police said.

Also, a 14-year-old girl was shot and wounded on the city's West Side around 2:50 a.m. Saturday. The girl was standing with a group of people in the 5100 block of West Crystal Street when an argument erupted, and someone took out a handgun and fired, striking the girl in the back. The girl was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, with one gunshot wound, police said.

In other incidents:

• The most recent reported shooting was at 3:45 a.m. Monday, when a person was shot in the leg in the 7700 block of South Claremont Avenue. Further details were unknown.

• Earlier, a teen was shot and wounded in the 4300 block of South Washtenaw Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood. That shooting happened in 11:47 p.m. Sunday, and the victim, a 17-year-old boy, was struck in the leg and hand, police said.

The suspects fired the shots from a passing sport-utility vehicle, and fled the scene. The victim was reported in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital following the shooting, which was likely gang-related, police said.

• At 10:10 p.m. Sunday, two men were shot and injured in the 4200 block of South Wabash Avenue.

A 26-year-old man was shot in the back, and was in critical condition early Monday at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, police said. Another man, 41, was shot in the abdomen and was listed in good condition at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, police said.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known, and no one was in custody early Monday, police said.

• Around 6:35 p.m. Sunday, a 21-year-old man was shot and wounded as he drove on the 400 block of East 46th Street in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood, when someone in another vehicle shot the victim in the chest, police said. The victim was transported to Provident Hospital of Cook County in an unknown condition.

• A 20-year-old man was walking on the 4800 block of South Forrestville Avenue about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, when a white vehicle approached and several shots were heard. The victim was shot in the buttocks and the vehicle sped away, police said.

• Around 1:15 a.m. Sunday, two men were shot and wounded in the 5900 block of South Calumet Avenue. They were both in the front-seat of a car in an alley, when a minivan passed them, stopped and moved in reverse, and someone inside opened fire, police said. One of the victims was wounded in the abdomen, the other in both the hip and abdomen.

• At 9:40 p.m. Saturday, a 40-year-old man was shot and wounded in the 6600 block of South Justine Street in the Englewood neighborhood. A gunman approached the man from a nearby alley and opened fire, striking the victim who was standing on the street. He was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, officials said.

• Around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, a 23-year-old man was shot in the head at King Drive an Garfield Boulevard. The man was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center in serious condition, police said.

• Around 5:45 p.m. Saturday, shots were fired from inside a residence in the 6400 block of South Paulina Street, striking an 18-year-old man in the back. The victim was standing on the sidewalk when someone fired shots from an open front door, Englewood police District Lt. Brent Fidler said.
The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, Fidler said. The gunman was apprehended about a block away.

• Around 10:55 p.m. Friday, a 20-year-old man was shot and wounded in the 3800 block of West Pippin Street on the Southwest Side. The man was walking when someone fired shots in a passing vehicle, wounding him in the neck. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was in stable condition, police said.
